Message from Jane Lawrence about Student Deaths

Dear students,

It is with great sadness that I must announce the death of two UC Merced freshmen, Jessica Lopez and Leslie Alvarez.

Jessica, 19, was from Five Points. She was a student in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, but had not declared a major.

Leslie, 19, was a biology major from Laton.

Jessica and Leslie lived on campus and were active members of BELLAS, a Latina sorority group on campus.

Both were involved in a traffic accident Saturday morning on Lake Road. The two other students involved are recovering.

Chancellor Steve Kang asked me to share his condolences with the campus.

"The UC Merced community mourns the loss of Jessica and Leslie. I offer my deepest sympathy to their families and friends during this period of great loss."

Counseling is available for students through the Counseling & Psychological Services Office. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this service to discuss their feelings. Students may contact the office by calling 209-228-4266.

A moment of silence will be held at noon on Tuesday in front of the Leo and Dottie Kolligian Library. Information on campus memorial services will be announced when plans are finalized.

Jessica and Leslie will be deeply missed by the entire UC Merced community.

Sincerely,

Jane Lawrence, Ph.D.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
