Tips for a Safe Winter Break

Dear Students,

The fall semester is coming to end, and most of you will be traveling home to spend time with family and friends. While the holidays are a time for celebration, they are also a time of increased risk.

To better help protect you during the winter break, UC Merced’s Division of Student Affairs and Department of Police and Public Safety would like to offer you safety tips and precautions before you leave.

Secure Your Home (especially if you live off campus)

Double check that all windows, doors and sliding doors are locked.

Close all drapes and blinds.

Place a light on a timer; this will give the appearance of someone being home.

Temporarily stop mail and newspaper deliveries.

Let a trusted neighbor know you will be away and ask them to keep an eye on your residence.

Remove valuable items before you leave (laptops, jewelry, bikes, etc.). If that is not possible, lock them away in a drawer, closet or other secure location.

Keep in mind the police department offers the Bikes and Electronics Registration Program, which provides a security tracking label applied to bikes, laptops, desktops, iPods and other valuable property ($3 per bike and $2 per electronic item). Register your valuables here.

Don't communicate your vacation plans on your voicemail greeting or through social media channels. Thieves recognize a potential burglary victim when they see messages like, "I am out of here for a month!"

Travel Safety

Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk, out of sight. Keep your doors locked and windows closed.

Remember the basics: Use safety belts; don’t drink and drive; don’t text and drive; slow down in fog and other hazardous conditions; and have emergency supplies in your vehicle to keep you warm and hydrated in the event of a breakdown.

Your safety and security are our No. 1 concern. We hope you have a safe and restful winter break! We look forward to your return in January.

Sincerely,
