January 2023 Edition: Q & A

Q: What does the Dean of Students do?

A: The Dean of Students supports five campus departments, coordinates the Student Response Team, and works to provide students with resources, advocacy and support. To request a meeting with the Dean of Students please go to the Dean of Students webpage, click on “How Can We Assist You,” and then select the appropriate button that corresponds with the reason for your meeting.

Q: How is the campus responding to the storms/flooding?

A: We hope that you and your loved ones are staying safe throughout this time. If you live on campus and need to adjust your move-in time to allow for a later return, please contact Housing at housing@ucmerced.edu or by phone at 209-228-2293. To stay up-to-date on campus announcements related to storms/flooding, please see the campus webpage here and make sure you are signed up for UC Merced Alerts. At this time we are not anticipating any delays to the start of spring semester classes. However, if you do not believe you will be able to return by the first day of classes, you should contact your faculty directly to let them know of your situation. This helpful tool was shared in a recent campus email and provides timely information on flood-impacted routes. Hopefully this will help as you plan travel back to campus in the coming days.

Q: What emergency resources are available to students?

A: Emergency resources may include: emergency funding for unanticipated expenses, emergency housing for when someone is experiencing housing instability, access to food resources such as grocery gift cards, or gas gift cards for transportation needs, etc.  Eligibility must first be determined by Financial Aid and then students would be referred to participate in a Financial Coaching session before any award could be granted. For more information on eligibility guidelines please see here.

Q:  What happens if I am “dropped for nonpayment?”

A:  This means that you are unenrolled from courses because you have a past-due account balance that hasn’t been paid by the published deadline at the start of the semester. If you have been dropped for non-payment it is important you take action right away. Contact the Students First Center as soon as possible. The deadline to contact the Students First Center and reenroll in courses is same as the add/drop deadline. For further assistance with this process, students should contact the Students First Center and visit this website: https://registrar.ucmerced.edu/policies/drop-non-payment.
