February 2023 Edition: Q & A

Q: How can I find out about on-campus jobs?

A: First you will want to make sure you have signed up for Handshake. Through this platform you can set up appointments with career center staff, search on-campus and local job listings, learn about upcoming employer visits and career fairs (including the spring virtual career fair coming soon)! For more information including a variety of services available through the Student Career Center, please see here.

Q: Is it possible to reserve a room on campus for a study group meeting?

A: Yes. To reserve a classroom or non-instructional space such as an outdoor space or collaborative work room, please see here. Click the FAQ button at the top of that page for additional information including any number of room reservation scenarios you may encounter. Please note, some rooms on campus (e.g., Conference Center Rooms, Crescent Arch Room, California Room) have room charges associated with the use of the rooms and require a COA (Chart of Accounts) to request the rooms. Hospitality Services manages these rooms and can assist you with your events. For more information or questions about these rooms, please email hospitalityservice@ucmerced.edu.

Q: I heard there were specific times reserved in the gym for women and non-binary students. When is this? Do I have to sign up?

A: Yes, that is correct, and no sign ups are required. Just go to the Student Activities and Athletics Center (SAAC) during designated hours, Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 12-2pm.

Q: I broke my laptop and can’t afford a new one right now. What can I do?

A: There are some resources you should know about. First, if you are an undergraduate student, you likely qualify for the technology loan program which can provide you temporary access to a laptop. Second, students can request a one-time cost of attendance adjustment to get approved for additional loans through Financial Aid to purchase a replacement laptop. For more information, please contact Financial Aid. Additionally, the School of Natural Sciences also sponsors a laptop lending program for students in the Natural Science majors.
